Meet Roxanne Bocyck and Frank Whaley
Author Roxanne Bocyck and illustrator Frank Whaley combined real-world school bus safety experience with engaging storytelling and vibrant illustrations to create Tuffy the School Bus Safety Hero, a book designed to help children develop safe habits that can last a lifetime.
About the Author
Roxanne Bocyck is a real, former school bus driver! Inspired by her years of experience, Roxanne writes stories that help children learn important safety lessons about how to stay safe when riding the school bus.
Her program, Respect the Bus™, also helps drivers with student management.
Roxanne began her career in 1995 as a school bus monitor for special needs students before becoming a school bus driver. Her passion for learning and teaching led her to provide safety programs in her school district and become a New York State School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI).
While driving a school bus, Roxanne attended Syracuse University part-time to earn her bachelor’s degree in writing and communications. She was featured in the university’s advertising campaign as the school bus driver who went “back to school.”
In 2016, Roxanne became a Certified New York State Master Instructor for School Bus Driver Instructors. Today, she is a retired author, writing books from her personal experiences and her Polish culture. She enjoys writing stories like this to help protect children by teaching them principles about school bus safety, and especially about staying safe around the “Danger Zone.”
About the Illustrator
Frank Whaley was born and raised in Upstate, New York. Growing up, Frank developed a passion for reading and writing. He is the author and illustrator of several children’s books and coloring books.
Children’s books hold a special place in Frank’s heart because they spark imagination, curiosity, and a lasting sense of comfort. He believes engaging stories and colorful illustrations make children laugh, feel understood, or see the world differently.
Through drawing, Frank brings characters and emotions to life, helping young readers connect with stories beyond words. He finds it rewarding to create stories and artwork that inspire confidence, kindness, and creativity which become
cherished memories as children grow.
